"Turbulence to Triumph" School Theme

Dear Parents,

Welcome to week three in November!  It’s hard to believe we are so close to the holidays.  We are so thrilled with each day that we have with your children!  It’s wonderful the things we can do when we all work together.  What a blessing it is to have such a strong supportive community.

Please make note of the following:

1. No Parent-Teacher Conference in November

As a reminder, we held a parent-teacher conference in September. We desired to have PTC early on so parents would have time to work with their students.  Our next PTC will be held on February 17th.

2. Life Skills Para Educator needed

Our life skills students are some of the most amazing students we have here at CVHS. We are looking to hire an aide to help in the classroom. This is a  29 hour a week position that fits within the school day. Please reach out to Kenyon Christen with any questions at [email protected] or apply at https://asd.astihosted.com/Login2.aspx

3. Skyward vs. Canvas

We often hear questions about what parents should be checking, Skyward or Canvas. The answer is both. Skyward is the official platform for grades. The official grade is the grade on Skyward Canvas is the platform to access and submit assignments. There may be a short delay in seeing your grades updated from assignments submitted on Skyward.

4. Lunchroom Position

Our Lunchroom is hiring a nutrition service worker. The position would be about 5.5 hours per day and pay $11.64 per hour. We are hoping someone can begin immediately.  A current food handlers permit is required within two weeks of hiring. Apply online at https://alpineschools.org/employment/

5. Concurrent Enrollment Saves You $$$!

I sent this out, but we only had a few views on our channel.  Please watch this video that shows students how Concurrent Enrollment is basically like getting a HUGE Scholarship!  We will help our students every single step of the way.

6. Math Labs

Just a reminder that our math department is offering math labs (online and in-person)  for students who need extra help. Please see the attached schedule that will remain through the end of November. Labs will continue after November, but the schedule may be adjusted depending on funding.

7. Two Week Calendar

2-week calendar

Let’s make it a wonderful November!

Sincerely,

Monday, 10-26-2020 "Turbulence to Triumph"

Dear Parents,

To win is to contend, to struggle, to strive.  I love this quote.  Right now many of us feel more stress, struggle, etc. than we normally do.  We are so fortunate at CVHS to have time to work on these things and develop ways to strive.  Our students are determined to defy the odds and rise above.  If you have not had a chance to watch our Jet Time videos, I invite you to see what our students are learning each week. Here are seven videos that I strongly recommend you watch with your family so you can talk about this with your children.

Jet Talk 1 – Starting Strong

Jet Talk 2 – Your most powerful tool – MINDSET

Jet Talk 3 The Foundation

Jet Talk 4 – What are you building?

Jet Talk 5 – Avoid Distraction

Jet Talk 6 – Stretch your comfort zone

Jet Talk 7 Consistency is better than perfection

Please make note of the following:

1. Internet Safety

Our School Community Council is working on ways to increase internet safety.  Here is a host of Internet Safety videos and lessons Link that will help you lead these types of conversations with your family.

2. ACT PreTest

Saturday, November 14th at 8:30- 12:00 we will have a practice ACT.  Please Link Here for more information.

3. School Safety Training

The following videos were shared with students at the school as safety training. Here they are for your reference at home.

4. COVID Safety & Health

As we see COVID numbers spike in our area, we are grateful for the opportunity to still see our students twice each week. Please continue to wear your masks and socially distance from one another whenever possible. As we focus on these two things that we can control, we minimize our chances of illness and quarantine.

COVID Update – New Dashboard Reporting

You have probably noticed some changes on the dashboard when it comes to the way ASD is reporting positive COVID cases. The individual school reports are now based on the 10-day isolation number. The total number and percentages at the top are referring to the 14-day period following a positive test. Our conversations with the UCHD will still begin when a school reaches 15 cases/14-day. The POC’s and nurses are doing a great job with the reporting.

5. Sterling Scholars

Sterling Scholar applications are now being accepted in the student center (counseling office).  If you have questions email Anna Butler at [email protected]

6. A Message From Our Student Council

Aviators…

We are excited to announce our first annual Cedar Valley Airlift. We are fortunate to be in a community with families and businesses that have supported our school and it’s many programs.  As Aviators, we have opportunities to give back to our community and its families that are in need.  This year, starting November 2nd and running through November 20th, CVHS will be holding a food drive. Food that is collected by our Aviators will be donated to both students and families in need in our school community and distributed through our school pantry. Our goal this year is to have enough food in our school pantry to support every aviator and their family that needs assistance.

We are encouraging all students to participate in this worthwhile event. Donations can be made by bringing their non-perishable food items (water bottles, fruit snacks, granola bars, fish crackers, peanut butter crackers, ramen cups, mac n cheese cups, chip variety boxes, nature valley bars) to their jet time class. Students will receive information relating to food items that will be accepted and additional details relating to this activity during our normally scheduled school announcements and during their jet time period.

We are also working with our local businesses and requesting donations to support our food drive and the many students who are participating in it.

Additionally, we’ve got some exciting ideas on how to turn this rewarding experience into a fun competition between our jet time classes at CVHS.
The first place will receive Chick-Fil-A. Second place, pizza. Third place, dessert.

We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to our Cedar Valley Community and we look forward to the rewarding experiences that our students will have as they serve those around them.

Take care and stay healthy,

7.School Activities

Please see our school calendar to view all our activities.  This is a live document that we keep updated daily.  Sometimes activities and games are changed with very short notice, so it is imperative to check daily.

Thank you for the opportunity to work with you and your beautiful children.  I do love them so much!

"Turbulence to Triumph" School Theme

Dear Parents,

When airplanes crash, we all hear about them, however; no one knows the number of airplanes that land.  What a great analogy!  It is a great reminder that there are so many good things that are happening at school and our community during this pandemic.  One of the good things in my life is that my daughter had a baby on Wednesday.   I took her other three children for a few days.  As an empty nester,  that experience made me appreciate what you all do on a daily basis to balance family and home life.  I was exhausted!  But… I loved it.

So many great things are happening at CVHS!  Please make note of the following:

1. College Application Week

As a reminder, please look at last week’s email regarding Utah College Application Week for the week of October 5-9

2. School Safety Plan

The Alpine School District and (School) is committed to the safety and wellbeing of every student and staff member. With the support of the district safety committee, a standard response safety protocol for emergencies has been implemented in every school. The Alpine School District Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is reviewed, evaluated, and improved annually by the district safety committee, school safety teams, school community councils, and local emergency response personnel.  Staff training and school-wide safety drills throughout the school year will teach students and staff how to respond in an emergency situation. Please remember safety is the responsibility of each of us.  If you see something, say something.

3. Band

We are also the fastest-growing band program in the state.  In Saturday’s competition. We competed against Green Canyon, Mountain Crest, Tooele, Stansbury, Ogden, Sky View, Ridgeline, and Uintah. We took 2nd place in every individual category and 2nd place overall. Out of the bands in our region, we had the highest score by a significant margin. No region trophies are given until the last competition of the year, but I figured I’d let you know where we stand.

4. Parent-Teacher Conference

As a reminder, Cedar Valley HS is having a  Parent-Teacher Conference on Wednesday, September 30th  from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Teachers will be available in their rooms to visit with you either online or in person. Feel free to reach out to your students’ teachers via email for a virtual conference if this better suits your needs.

5. Mountain Biking Club Team (Not School-sponsored)

Turbulence to Triumph School Theme

Dear Parents,

Our school theme is so pertinent right now, Turbulence through Triumph.  We will triumph through COVID,  and I believe there are many silver linings: Our students are working hard and are happy.  Our teachers have been fine-tuning their skills with online learning support and are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to help our students be successful.

Homecoming is this week Sept 21st – 26th.  There will be a variety of activities throughout the week and we couldn’t be more excited!  Our alumni are welcome to all events and activities.  This will be a great opportunity to sign yearbooks etc.  Please read through this email for some very important information.

Please make note of the following:

1. COVID Updates

As you know, Utah County is the “hot spot” for COVID cases right now in the state of Utah.  Please remember the importance of following the guidelines both in and out of school.

Our current numbers in ASD of “active” cases are:

  1. Secondary – 85

  2. Elementary – 12

  3. Employees – 40

*Active means a person is in the 10 day isolation period because of a positive case. Once they are no longer active, they are allowed to come back to school.

2.  Utah College Application Week

The week of October 5-9 Cedar Valley High School will join the Utah System of Higher Education in sponsoring Utah College Application Week (UCAW).  The purpose of this event is to acquaint students with the college application process and to communicate the importance of applying to college.  During this week, all seniors expected to graduate in 2021 will be encouraged to apply for admission to at least one college or university during their English class. Fee waivers will be available for some institutions during UCAW.

Information about completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) – a gateway to scholarships, grants, and low-interest rate loans to help pay for college – will also be made available during this event. The FAFSA completion Night will be October 7th from 5-7 pm at CVHS. We anticipate that students and their families will need to work together in gathering the information necessary to complete the FAFSA and college applications.

Families are invited to participate in UCAW events, including:

  • Volunteering at the College and FAFSA night event (contact Marcie Murri in the Student Center);

  • Assisting your student during the application process;

  • Asking your students questions about their future plans and telling them about your experiences;

  • Attending the free College and FAFSA night October 7th, 5-7 pm.

Here is a link to college quick facts. (Tours, admissions, due dates, scholarships, financial aid, etc.)

Here is a link to creating an FSA ID that will be needed to fill out the FAFSA form.

Check out the Cedar Valley counseling website –https://cvhs.alpineschools.org/counseling/.  It is being updated and has and will have lots of information available.  Also, follow us on Instagram @cedarvalleystudentcenter for updates on scholarships, colleges, application deadlines, events, opportunities, etc…

3. Parent-Teacher Conference

6. Clubs

We are excited to provide this list of clubs for students to consider joining. With each club, you will find a link to the constitution and club application and contact information for the advisor. Also, make sure you send a signed parent permission form to the front office for each club your student wants to be a part of.

7. Parent-Teacher Conference Time Change

Please be aware that the Parent-Teacher Conference is on Wednesday, September 30th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Please plan on attending.  As a reminder, there should not be any type of after school activities or practices going on that requires a teacher to attend. Also, parents may reach out to you if they prefer a virtual conference. Please be prepared to facilitate this.

We will label sections of the stadium bleachers and gym seating to encourage social distancing and to assist with contact tracing in the event of positive cases. Please take note of your section when seated. We encourage our fans to spread out, sit with immediate families, use all available seating, and to please keep all children in the seating area. Unsupervised children will be asked to sit with their families or will be asked to leave the facility. If the need arises, we will take necessary steps to encourage social distancing such as designating bleachers for seating, limiting the number of fans in the venue, or in extreme cases, eliminating fans together. Fans assume all risks associated with possible exposure to COVID-19. Our hope is that by following the guidelines, we can have a safe and fun spectator experience. Ticket Purchases for football, volleyball, basketball, and wrestling will be cash only. Fans must purchase tickets at the gate. Please bring exact change. Ticket prices are $5 per individual or $20 per immediate family. Again, please note the section in which you sit for contact tracing.

Once there, parents and students can access a Canvas Intro, a simple guide to Canvas Observer accounts, a link to our Technology Help Desk, and more.

7. COVID-19 UPDATE

Working together with the Utah County Health Department, news media, and other stakeholders, we have put together a dashboard and press release that will be shared at the beginning of each week (usually on Mondays). Here the information shared today:

As of September 7, 2020, Alpine School District reported a total of 75 current positive COVID-19 cases. Alpine serves communities in 14 cities and 92 schools. Here is a breakdown of the 75 current positive cases:

  • 39 secondary students,

  • 6 elementary students, and

  • 30 employees.

For weekly COVID-19 positive caseload updates, please go to our dashboard found here www.alpineschools.org/returntolearn. Our dashboard will be updated each Monday. For clarification of the decision to report district-wide numbers only, Alpine School District is committed to protecting the privacy of all students and employees. In most cases, where there is a single positive case at a school, it is easily identifiable for individuals to be noticed when someone is missing from class or when their teacher has a substitute. Assumptions can be made and we have seen how it can negatively impact individuals. For this reason, we will continue to report elementary, secondary, and employee totals only, rather than by school site.

Although part of Alpine’s Return to Learn plans are to track and tabulate numbers at individual schools, we cannot control what happens outside of the school day, in the community, and homes. Our united efforts are to help minimize the transmission of COVID-19. It will take all of us working together to social distance whenever possible, wear masks, and wash hands frequently.

8. School Activities

Please see our school calendar to view all upcoming activities.  This is a live document that we keep updated daily.  Sometimes activities and games are changed with very short notice, so it is imperative to check daily.

Let’s make it a fantastic week!

Sincerely,

Courtney Johnson
